2015 is (I cannot believe it) slowly but surely coming to an end, but the roster of terrific picture books is not slowing down!

Here’s a rundown of some of the recently read great picture book titles I have read and would recommend:

The Cow Who Climbed a Tree by Gemma Merino. I love Merino’s The Crocodile Who Didn’t Like Water and have used to great effect at preschool storytime, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one. It did not disappoint: sweet, goofy, and imaginative, Merino’s latest a real treat- with a special surprise for readers of the Crocodile book!

Night Animals by Gianna Marino. This picture book by author/illustrator Marino made me laugh so much. It’s a zany picture book about nocturnal creatures filled with: incredible and dynamic illustrations that kids and adults will love, confused animals and some raucous humour. A must-try for a storytime read aloud!

Touch the Brightest Star by Christie Matheson. Were you forever on the hunt for something to follow the lovely and interactive Tap the Magic Tree? Matheson has crafted a follow-up here, perfect for night time/bedtime or for when you need a softer read aloud at a storytime.

Nerdy Birdy by Aaron Reynolds, illus. Matt Davies . Ah, Nerdy Birdy, you are a wonderful story. A tale of not fitting in that you think you’ve heard before, but Reynolds (author of perennial favourite Creepy Carrots)- with Davies’ supremely cool illustrations- make this one go a little deeper and a lot funnier.

Imaginary Fred by Eoin Colfer, illus. Oliver Jeffers. Along with Leo: A Ghost Story, Imaginary Fred is another curious, unexpected and very touching take on imaginary friends and friendships. Jeffers continues to knock it out of the park with his minimal yet affecting illustrative style. Colfer’s fluid writing, however, was the surprise here; crafting such a full and moving story here, within the boundaries of a picture book.
