Welcome to another round-up of recently read and recommended picture books! In no particular order, here are the titles: the superb The Patchwork Bike, by Australian writer and slam poet Maxine Beneba Clarke, with illustrations (acrylic on recycled cardboard- amazing) done by artist Van Thanh Rudd, this story touches on everything from the latitude of imagination to poverty- be sure to read the Author and Illustrator Notes; Angry Cookie by Laura Dockrill, with amazing illustrations by Maria Karipidou, has quickly become a standout, blending interactive elements with tremendous humour and heart- and starring one angry, expressive cookie that readers will undoubtedly connect with; Leah Gilbert’s A Couch for Llama, a joyful, adorably told and illustrated story about one family’s search for a perfect new couch that goes slightly awry when a llama tries to befriend it; William Wakes Up, written by Linda Ashman with illustrations by Chuck Groenink, the follow-up to William’s Winter Nap (which, I’d like to note, has become a household favourite!), is as bouncy, lively and utterly lovely as the first; Greg Pizzoli’s The Book Hog, a funny and library-positive tale about a porcine friend who is infatuated by every aspect of books and loves collecting them- but holds a big secret close; the meditative and softly peculiar Music for Mister Moon, from the award-winning duo of Philip C. Stead and illustrator Erin E. Stead, a dreamy exploration on music, performing, and wishes; and last but not least, Another by Christian Robinson, a bright and fascinating wordless picture book done in the author-illustrator’s unforgettable style, centered on perspectives and the possibilities in/of other worlds. Enjoy!
