Welcome to another round-up of recently read and recommended picture books! In no particular order, here are the titles: let’s start with Grandma’s Tiny House: A Counting Story! by Janay Brown-Wood, illustrated Priscilla Burris, an adorable and vivacious counting story about friends and family coming over and filling up a grandma’s house to almost (!) bursting with their company and delicious treats; be sure to check out the superbly told, funny, and gorgeous Princess Puffybottom…and Darryl by Susin Nielsen (Canadian author of middle grade favourites such as No Fixed Address) and illustrator Olivia Chin Mueller, which features a disdainful-to-tolerable relationship between a master cat and fluffy new dog…and an ending with a big surprise; Mary Wears What She Wants by author-illustrator Keith Negley is a picture book inspired by the life of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a doctor, Medal of Honor recipient, and all-around incredible pioneer; Andrea Tsurumi’s Crab Cake: Turning the Tide Together is a marvelously illustrated tale that takes place under the sea and brilliantly works in topics regarding environmentalism, community, and sustainability; How to Give Your Cat a Bath: In Five Easy Steps by Nicola Winstanley, illustrated by John Martz is a very, very funny and sly story (one that had my four year old daughter cackling over with laughter) about a young girl’s growing struggles to bathe her rather roguish cat; Vanessa Brantley-Newton’s Grandma’s Purse is a lovely, bright and affectionate story featuring a young girl who absolutely adores her grandmother…and all the amazing discoveries in her grandma’s fabulous – possible out of this world!- purse; Hello, Door by Alastair Heim, illustrated by Alisa Coburn is a delightful, clever story (and happy nod to Goldilocks and the Three Bears!) making the most of minimal text and wonderful illustrations in which a burgling fox might not learn his lesson; and last but not least is the truly beautiful and adventure-filled story Off & Away by Cale Atkinson, a tale starring a young protagonist named Jo who faces their biggest fears, makes amazing new friends, and collects some incredible stories along the way.
