Picture Books:

I Got the Christmas Spirit by Connie Schofield-Morrison, illus. by Frank Morrison. From the collaborators behind I Got the Rhythm, Schofield-Morrison and award-winning illustrator Frank Morrison return with the jubilant (and compassionate) I Got the Christmas Spirit. With precise, rhythmic text and focus on sounds (every page has a featured repetition of noise), we follow our young protagonist as she makes her way to a visit with Santa and surprises with a very special wish for the holidays. Gorgeously illustrated and absolutely filled to the brim with compassion, warmth and joy.

Holiday Heroes Save Christmas by Adam Wallace, illus. by Shane Clester. Fans of action-packed, graphic novel style picture books will have fun with Holiday Heroes Save Christmas. When Santa falls ills right before Christmas, he asks for other holiday heroes- the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, Witch and Leprechaun- to come to his rescue and fill in. However, Santa’s job isn’t simple or straightforward, and the heroes have limited time to get organized or Christmas might just be ruined!

I Saw Santa in Canada by J.D. Green, illus. by Nadja Sarell and Srimalie Bassani. Part of the I Saw Santa in… series (which included places like Toronto, Vancouver, Nova Scotia), the Canada entry sees Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus taking a holiday across Canada! While Santa thinks he’s staying safely hidden out of view during his travels, keen-eyed children are spotting Santa in cities across the provinces, writing in to the North Pole and alarming the poor elves! This is a sweet and fun book with an added ‘search-and-find’ element that is sure to delight readers.

Merry Christmas, Little Elliot by Mike Curato. A seasonal title in the popular Little Elliot series from Mike Curato, Merry Christmas, Little Elliot is another wonderfully kindhearted entry to the series. Elliot thinks about what he wants most for Christmas and asks Santa for “the Christmas spirit”. As Santa explains that he has to find that on his own, Little Elliot and his friend Mouse receive a letter from a young child that was meant for Santa Claus! The two best friends then do everything possible to make the child’s wish come true all the while discovering the Christmas spirit on their journey. A lovely, heartfelt Christmas story featuring Curato’s beautifully cozy, retro-style illustrations.
